The benefits of goji berries are countless, giving us every reason to eat
incorporate them more into our daily lives. They’re chock full of every vital
nutrient your body wants and they’re known as the “happy berry”. Isn’t
that enough of a reason to eat them?
Seriously though, if you’re a Conscious Diva that wants to take her health
to the next level (I’ll assume you are), you’ve got to know about at least 8 of
the creative ways to use goji berries. Sure, you can just eat them straight out
of the bag as I suggest below, but there’s more fun we can have with this
youth-enhancing, raisin-like chewy dried fruit! Let’s have some fun…
High quality, soft, dried organic goji berries on the left (sourced from
pristine regions in Asia) & packaged, hard & crunchy organic goji’s
from the bulk bin on the right. Go soft!
Straight out of the bag as a snack
Keep in mind while reading this post that high quality goji berries are of a
softer variety and not the hard crunchy ones (like what’s found in bulk bins)
as that’s a sign of poor quality goji’s. Dragon Herbs and Bija (on Amazon) are
the only 2 brands I know of that offer the best goji’s ever. When you shake the
bag or box, they should NOT shake – they should stick together. Warning: they
are addictive! See picture to the right for a comparison…
Super Goji Berry Trail Mix
Soak and dehydrate (if you can) your favorite organic nuts and seeds. Leave
them whole and/or chop some of them up into smaller pieces, and add a heaping
handful of organic or wildcrafted dried goji berries to the mix. Hit the
trails, go for a bike ride, or jet set across the world with your super berry
high protein trail mix. Goji berries are a complete protein, so they’re
ideal for athletes and peeps that want those amino acids for the nervous system,
brain, heart, and… well, everything else!
Goji berry tea
Drop several goji berries into your glass of spring
water and allow to soak/steep for 15 minutes or longer. They act as a natural
sweetener, releasing some of the sugar into the water (though it’s not overly
sugary in taste). This is bliss-inducing goji berry tea! Add a slice of lemon
for a tart twist.
As a topping / decoration for smoothies, puddings, cakes & cupcakes
Sprinkle several goji berries on your healthy kitchen creations. Kids will love
this, as will adults. It brightens up everything you do, and lifts your mood to
boot! I often add goji berries on top of the Creamy Cacao Pudding recipe and the chewy texture is great on top of this
smooth silky pudding – try it yourself!
Soaked / hydrated and blended into smoothies
Add 1 tablespoon of soaked (for 5+ minutes) goji
berries to green smoothies (with 60% sweet organic fruit and 40% green leafys),
or to superfood smoothies with nut/seed mylk as the base and layers of
superfoods mixed in.
Fresh goji berries from the farmer’s market
Add to your tonic herbal tea
Add just a few goji berries to your brew either during your tea brewing time on
the stove, or once poured into your mug, for added sweetness and age-defying
antioxidants.
- your favorite organic nuts & seeds, ideally soaked & dehyrated
(start with 2 cups)
- a big handful of goji berries
- medjool dates (start with 2 and add more as needed for the mixture to bind
together)
- 1 tbsp raw cacao powder (add more if desired)
- 1 tsp – 1 tbsp superfood powder of choice (green powder, maca, goji extract
powder, bee pollen, spirulina, etc)
- 1 teaspoon vanilla bean powder
- 1 teaspoon lucuma powder
- a pinch of sea salt
Chill for an hour or longer. Keep a container in the fridge for easy
snacking! Experiment with the recipe, you’ll find what you like!
“Ants on a log” (remember this
snack as a kid, but with raisins?)
- spread raw almond butter (instead of peanut butter) on sliced organic celery
sticks and top with goji berries!
